‘Two sexes, and that’s all there is to it’: Biologist defends JK Rowling’s comments

A biologist has defended Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling on comments referencing biological sex as the standard for defining a man or woman.

Atheist and biologist Richard Dawkins said there are only two biological sexes based on his research.

“There are two sexes. You can talk about gender if you wish,” Dawkins told Piers Morgan Uncensored. “As a biologist, there are two sexes, and that’s all there is to it.”

Rowling received criticism for her tweets regarding the gender-inclusive language of “people who menstruate.” In January, she also garnered backlash by stating that “real misogyny” is found in men telling women how to behave, think, or feel.

Dawkins called those who threatened to cancel Rowling over her comments “bullies.”

“We’ve seen the way J.K. Rowling has been bullied, the way Kathleen Stock has been bullied,” Dawkins said, referring to a British professor who questioned the authenticity of transgender women claiming to be women. “They’ve stood up to it, but it’s very upsetting, the way this tiny minority of people has managed to capture the discourse and to really talk errant nonsense.”

Dawkins was stripped of a humanist award in 2021 due to a tweet supporting the discussion of the legitimacy of activists’ demands to change language and biological definitions.

“Sex really is binary, and therefore, it’s certainly worth discussing that odd anomaly, which I pointed out in that tweet,” Dawkins said in defense of his comments.
