Russia will respond ‘accordingly’ if Ukraine receives depleted uranium shells
Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed concern about the United Kingdom’s plans to supply Ukraine with ammunition containing depleted uranium (DU) and warned that Russia will respond “accordingly,” possibly with nuclear weapons. Putin claims that the Western nations are already using weapons with nuclear components. Annabel Goldie, a UK defense minister, confirmed that the depleted uranium armor piercing rounds would be provided to Ukraine, as they are effective in defeating modern tanks and armored vehicles. The Russian officials criticized the UK move, while Rebekah Koffler, a former Defense Intelligence Agency intel officer for Russian doctrine and strategy, said that such weapons are common in modern warfare. Depleted uranium is a chemically and radiologically toxic heavy metal that can infect the environment and cause cancer in humans.
According to Maria Zakharova, the Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, the UK’s plan to supply Ukraine with depleted uranium munitions compared to a “Yugoslav scenario,” where NATO utilized munitions with depleted uranium. Meanwhile, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) criticized the UK’s decision, saying that the move would be an “additional environmental and health disaster” for those living through the conflict in Ukraine. The EU conducted research that examined the impact of utilizing such munitions, discovering that combat zone residues displayed generally low concentrations of the metal, with a small number of ‘hot spots’. It also found that urine samples from serving soldiers and from civilians living in areas where such ammunition has been used, typically indicate low levels of DU exposure.
Putin made these remarks while Chinese President Xi Jinping was visiting Moscow to mend Russia-China relations and discuss ending the conflict in Ukraine.
