Escaped inmates found at IHOP
Police have recaptured two prisoners who escaped from Newport News Jail Annex. The inmates, John M. Garza and Arley V. Nemo, were found at a nearby IHOP on Tuesday morning. They had used crude tools made from a toothbrush and metal object, to dig through a wall and escape the facility. Garza, 37, was incarcerated for contempt of court, probation violations, and failure to appear. Nemo, 43, was held on charges of forgery, possession of a burglary tool, grand larceny, and contempt of court and probation violation. It is said that they will face additional charges for their escape.
Authorities were able to track them down when diners who recognized them called the local police. Newport News Sheriff, Gabe Morgan, thanked the citizens for their assistance and support. He also expressed thanks to the Newport News, Hampton, and James City County police departments.
“I extend my gratitude to the Newport News Police Department, the Hampton Police Department, and the James City County Police Department for their assistance in our attempt to recapture these inmates,”
“Moreover, I’m thankful for the citizens who observed Garza and Nemo at the IHOP and notified law enforcement. It reinforces what we always say, ‘see something, say something’.”
While in custody, Garza and Nemo had used a toothbrush and a metal object to make crude tools that helped them break through a wall and expose the rebar. They used the rebar to help them climb over the prison’s outer wall. The prison facility is conducting an internal investigation into ways of increasing security and reducing the likelihood of further escapes.
