Who are the congressional slackers? Nonpartisan center ranks least effective members

Despite being one of the most accomplished sessions in recent years, the members of Congress were ranked according to their legislative effectiveness by the nonpartisan Center for Effective Lawmaking (a partnership between Vanderbilt University and the University of Virginia). Here are the least effective members:

  • House GOP: Reps. Granger, Finstad, and Alderholt, who all scored an LES of 0.0
  • House Democrats: Marcia Fudge, who scored an LES of 0.0 (likely due to her exit to join the Biden administration)
  • Senate Republicans: Cindy Hyde-Smith with an LES of 0.022
  • Senate Democrats: Chuck Schumer topped Democrats with 0.326 LES

It’s worth noting that high-level leadership responsibilities can sometimes detract from a member’s own legislative efforts, which can result in a lower Legislative Effectiveness Score (LES). This was the case for some of the other notable mentions, such as House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Rep. Jim Jordan. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Rep. Gerry Connolly and Sen. Gary Peters topped Democrats, while Rep. Don Bacon and Sen. John Cornyn led the Republicans.

While salaries for both the House and Senate start at $174,000, being an effective legislator requires more than just showing up to work. According to the nonpartisan center’s ranking, some members of Congress have more work to do in terms of advancing legislation.
