Chevy to retire Camaro as it makes mandated EV transition

The iconic Chevy Camaro will soon be retired as General Motors transitions from gas-powered vehicles to electric cars.

A 2023 Chevy Camaro 2SS Convertible is seen at a Chevy dealership in Wheeling, Illinois. The Chevrolet Camaro is going out of production. General Motors announced on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 that it will stop making the current generation early next year.

This move will end production of Camaros in January 2024 at Chevy’s Lansing Grand River Assembly plant in Michigan. However, Chevy has promised that this is not the end of the Camaro’s story despite not announcing a replacement yet.

Chevy has traditionally been known for its motorsports presence with the Camaro in NASCAR and other circuits. Chevy plans to remain committed to the racing world.

Justin Allgaier takes his Camaro through its paces as he drives in the NASCAR Xfinity Series auto race at Pocono Raceway, July 23, 2022, in Long Pond, Pennsylvania. The Chevrolet Camaro, for years the dream car of many teenage American males, is going out of production in January.

Chevy’s announcement follows Dodge’s decision to unveil its final gas-powered muscle car, the 2023 Challenger SRT Demon 170, as automakers transition towards EVs. This shift is due to federal and state leaders banning the sale of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035.
