House GOP expands investigation into Manhattan DA ahead of expected Trump indictment

House Republicans are seeking to expand their investigation into the Manhattan district attorney’s office by seeking testimony from two former prosecutors who resigned from the office last year.

Jim Jordan( R-OH ), the chairman of the House Oversight Committee, asked former New York County Special Assistant District Attorney Mark Pomerantz and Carey Dunne, the former special assistant district attorney for Manhattan, for their involvement in the office’s investigation into former President Donald Trump.

The demands come before an anticipated prosecution regarding hush-money payment Trump reportedly ordered Michael Cohen, a former personal attorney, to get to porn star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 political system.

According to Jordan,” New York County District Attorney Alvin Bragg is apparently about to invest in an extraordinary misuse of legal authority: the indictment of a previous President of the United States and present declared candidate for that office.” The conclusion drawn from the sum of these facts is that social considerations drove Bragg’s looming prosecution.

Jordan specifically wants to know about Pomerantz and Dunn’s defections from the Manhattan DA work, which occurred not long after Bragg was appointed and lawyer and the Trump investigation was put on hold. Jordan claimed that Bragg was pressured to reopen the case by the pair’s resignation in that of that ruling.

The Ohio Republican wrote,” It now appears that your efforts to pity Bragg have succeeded as he is officially resurrecting a so-called” zombie” case against President Trump using an flimsy and unproven legal possibility.” ” Your actions … seriously cast doubt on the administration of fair and impartial justice in this matter.”

Jordan pressed the former prosecutors to provide any information pertaining to the Trump evaluation and testify before the House Oversight Committee. The request was made a few days after Democratic lawmakers wrote to Bragg requesting that he show and go over any inner contacts made with Pomerantz and Dunne.

These requests went unanswered by Bragg, who assured Axios that his work” would not be intimidated by attempts to undermine the righteousness process.”

The letter arrives as Trump is about to be charged in the hush-money way. What accusations the former leader might be facing are unknown. After Cohen repeatedly testified before the Manhattan great jury earlier this month, rumors of a potential prosecution started to circulate.

Cohen was found guilty in 2018 after admitting to paying two wives, including Stormy Daniels, who accused Trump of having sex with her to keep quiet. Cohen paid Daniels$ 130,000 as part of the plan, and the Trump Organization thereafter paid him back.

Later, Manhattan prosecutors launched an inquiry into the possibility that Trump fabricated business records in order to claim the insurance as a lawful expense. In New York, this type of offense is a criminal, but if Bragg’s work asserts that the fraud was meant to cover up another crime, it could be elevated to the rank of felony.

Federal prosecutors did not file charges against Trump at the time of Cohen’s trial because of advice from the Justice Department that a president who is currently in office may be charged with any crime. However, just before Trump resigned from office in 2021, prosecutors picked up the conversation about potential costs.

After Trump posted on his Truth Social account over the weekend that he anticipated being arrested on Tuesday and urged his supporters to protest and” take our nation back ,” the case attracted more attention. Increased protection measures have been put in place in front of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, the Capitol building, and Trump residence in Mar-a-Lago in response to the call for protests.

Republicans were quick to criticize Trump’s potential calling, calling it a social ploy in the midst of an important election cycle. On Monday, House Republicans declared they would start looking into Bragg and his actions in relation to Trump’s prosecution.
