Women’s college changes library’s name over ‘racist and anti-Semitic’ history

Bryn Mawr College, a women’s college in Pennsylvania, will now refer to its library as “Old Library” or “Great Hall” after removing the original name due to its racist and anti-Semitic history.

The first professor and next leader of the school, M. Carey Thomas, was honored when” Old Library” was renamed in 1935.

Thomas worked for Bryn Mawr until her retreat in 1922, and according to a speech made public by the college, she is regarded as one of the foremost proponents of women’s rights and world peace.

However, the statement continued,” naming this structure after Thomas also served as a historical marginalization.” It” silenced and erased the experiences of those who had been negatively impacted by the bigoted and anti-Semitic policies that Thomas promulgated as College chair and her energetic, people embrace of nazism.”

According to the classroom, Thomas’ opinions had an impact on the guidelines that shaped the norms and institutions of Bryn Mawr in a way that” harmed students, faculty, and people.”

According to the statement,” Her actions had an impact on potential students of color and Israeli students who were turned away from the College as well as those who afterwards became admitted and felt the effects of her choices.” Her actions hurt the entire school community because they went against the inclusion values that the College officially aspires to.

A working group was established after Bryn Mawr President Kimberly Cassidy announced a ban regarding the name of the library in response to the events at the Charlottesville protest in 2017.

According to the school statement,” Bryn Mawr just seeks to offer the College community opportunities for engagement, reflection, and healing as well as to contribute to efforts to address structural issues of cultural bias on campus.” ” A larger system of articulating and embracing a fuller understanding of the College’s last” requires acknowledging acts of restraint and Thomas’ background.
