House Republicans Ramp Up Oversight Of Manhattan DA

On Saturday, three Democratic chairmen of influential House Committees sent a letter to the district attorney in Manhattan requesting that he abide by monitoring demands related to former President Donald Trump’s political prosecution.

Prosecutors originally decided not to pursue the alleged charges related to hush cash payments.

To warn Manhattan DA Alvil Bragg about the repercussions of such an indictment and to outline three distinct issues” to protect former and / or current Presidents from politically motivated prosecutions by state and local officials ,” chairmen of the House Judiciary, Oversight, and Administration Committees spoke with him.

In response to lawmakers’ formal demand for a sit-down discussion regarding the Manhattan district attorney’s attempt to prosecute Trump last month, Braggs’ office wrote to them and declined their request. The request for witness by House members was slammed by Leslie Dubeck, the normal direction for the Manhattan DA’s office, as an” extraordinary investigation.”

Dubeck wrote,” The Letter just came after Donald Trump gave false hope that he would be arrested the following day and his attorneys apparently urged you to act.” ” Neither point serves as a valid justification for parliamentary investigation.”

An eight-page letter from House Republicans countered, outlining the implications of blatantly hyper-polized prosecutions against a former president and current Republican nominee for the 2024 election. A number of potential legislative changes to meet the requirement of” a true legislative purpose” were outlined by lawmakers, who also clarified that such an inquiry was permitted by the congressional statute of limitations.

Legislators wrote,” These legislative measures may include, for instance, broadening the existing legal right of removal of several cases from think court to national court.” ” The Committees require content from your work to educate our monitoring because your looming indictment of a previous President is an issue of first impression.”

Politicians also cited Bragg’s track record as the top prosecutor in Manhattan to show a blatant double standard.

The three House chairmen wrote,” Under your leadership, the New York County District Attorney’s Office has adopted and defended your progressive criminal justice policies, which include” downgrading” 52 % of felony cases to misdemeanors.”

On the other hand, Bragg is reportedly thinking about raising Trump’s prices from a criminal to criminal.

The Committee on the Judiciary may bring legislation to connect federal funds to improved social safety metrics, according to House Republicans,” to the extent that you are receiving federal funding and are choosing to prioritize clear political prosecutions over sensible people safe measures.”
