Jim Jordan demands answers on low ICE deportations

House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) sent letters to immigration officials on Monday. He questioned whether the officials are moving aggressively enough to detain and deport immigrants that enter the United States illegally.

Jordan asked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement representatives to appear before the courts committee for transcribed discussions regarding their compliance with, or lack thereof, federal immigration laws.

Jordan’s letter, which was distributed to field office managers in five buildings and five acting associate managers at the Enforcement and Removal Operations Office of the ICE, draws attention to the relatively low volumes of deportations in 2021 and 2022, the rising number of undocumented illegal immigrants, and unoccupied detention facilities.

According to Jordan, the average number of illegal alien removal decreased by 70 % in the fiscal years 2021 and 2022, and the Biden administration left 11, 000 open detention facilities during a time of escalating illegal immigration.

Jordan remarked that” the decision to leave so many areas empty raises serious concerns about ICE ERO’s performance of its mission to” protect the country through the arrest and elimination of those who undermine the health of our populations and the immigration our immigration guidelines.”

The requests are made as House Republicans look into organizations to cut cash from. Additionally, it comes soon after House GOP leader gave Jordan the go-ahead to postpone a meeting for this week in which eight bills that the party had prioritized were supposed to be discussed as the first step in the House floor vote.

According to a state by Punchbowl News on Thursday, those eight expenses won’t be passed until, at the earliest, mid-April after legislators return from Easter break.
