The following is a guest commentary by Theodore R. Malloch:

As someone who has fought against communism my entire life, I know just how dangerous this ideology is.

From the Cuban Missile Crisis, to the Berlin Airlift, to the communist revolutionaries infiltrating world capitals, I have always been a proud Cold Warrior.

Even as a child, I was a member of a youth group called the “Jet Cadets,” whose theme song was all about fighting against the “godless Soviet Russia.”

My education focused heavily on the perils of Marxist economics and the evils of communism, which carried over into my career as an academic, diplomat, and strategist.

Throughout it all, I fiercely debated, acted, and took the front lines against the USSR, even taking on foreign ministers and witnessing firsthand the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Now in 2023, Putin is attempting to revive the Soviet Union with China’s help. He is a kleptocratic leader with pretensions to retake former territory, including the Baltics and much of Eastern Europe.

We cannot let their efforts go without notice. Capitalism is a moral system that rewards hard work and innovation, while communism wages war against prosperity and freedom. We must call out these Marxist tendencies wherever they appear, whether in Russia, Cuba, or North Korea, but especially in China.

Our current President has failed to recognize the threat posed by Putin, who still possesses thousands of nuclear missiles capable of starting World War III.

The Soviet Union may have fallen in 1991, but Putin is doing everything in his power to bring it back. We must not give him the opportunity to succeed. Rather, we should follow in the footsteps of President Reagan and take a hard stance against these would-be usurpers.

Putin may be a mad dictator, but the Russian people are not our enemies. We must prevent Putin from expanding his territory while avoiding unnecessary deaths and territorial wars in places like Ukraine.

As the famous communist Vladimir Illich Lenin himself once said, “The capitalists will sell us the rope with which we will hang them.” We cannot give these latter-day Putinist-Soviets any rope.

It is time to recognize communism as the evil that it is and take a firm stand against those who promote it.
