Crime is just the beginning as GOP seeks to rein in DC’s liberal government
Washington, D.C. currently operates as an independent local government under the D.C. Home Rule Act, but lawmakers are considering restrictions on the district government’s power, including repealing its autonomy. The Act was passed in 1973, allowing the district to exercise some control over its own legislative affairs, but all laws require congressional approval. Rep. Andrew Clyde (R-GA) wants to repeal the Home Rule Act altogether, arguing that Washington should remain under federal control since the city is the seat of the federal government. The bill repealing the district’s revised criminal code passed with strong bipartisan support, marking the first time after 30 years that Congress has overturned a district law. Clyde is now targeting other district laws, such as police reform policies.
Rep. Eleanor Norton (D) represents Washington, D.C., in the House as a nonvoting member and has repeatedly introduced legislation to expand the district’s power and free itself from congressional oversight. She has also introduced the District of Columbia Home Rule Expansion Act and wants D.C. to become a state.
