Here Are The Fastest-Growing And Fastest-Shrinking Counties In America
The most significant population decline occurred in counties that are home to major cities in California, Illinois, and New York, while the counties in Arizona, Texas, and Florida with major cities witnessed the largest population growth, according to data released by the Census Bureau. Los Angeles County, California, had the most significant decline, with a population fall of 90,704, followed by Cook County, Illinois, with a decrease of 68,315.
The Census Bureau noted that migration and growth patterns approached levels previously seen before the lockdown-induced recession. Some urban counties experienced domestic outmigration at a slower pace, while counties with large universities rebounded fully as schools returned to conventional instruction.
The counties with the largest population growth were Maricopa County, Arizona, which gained 56,831 residents, and Harris County, Texas, which gained 45,626 residents. Collin and Denton County, Texas, and Polk and Lee County, Florida also saw significant growth.
Domestic migration patterns shifted considerably, with 60% of counties experiencing positive domestic migration last year. However, natural decrease outpaced natural increase in over 74% of counties, indicating more deaths than births in the majority of the United States. Increasing mortality due to an aging population and decreasing fertility are cited as two factors behind this phenomenon.
