The RESTRICT Act is a Dangerous Trojan Horse to Erode Our Freedoms

The RESTRICT Act, backed by Republicans in Congress, poses a significant threat to our freedom. Although its purpose is to protect Americans from Chinese spyware on TikTok, it could do much more than that. The act allows the Secretary of Commerce to identify and take action against anyone they deem a threat, including US citizens.

The act covers a broad range of technology products and services integral to data hosting or computing that use, process or retain sensitive personal data of over one million people. This scope includes wireless local area networks, mobile networks, internet hosting services, cloud-based or distributed computing and data storage, machine learning, and predictive analytics, among others. An individual can be declared a threat to national security, and without access to information in the possession of the Federal Government, it is impossible to contest that decision. FOIA requests cannot obtain information submitted to the Federal Government or created concerning review of a covered transaction. This means that a person could be declared a threat and shut down at the discretion of the bureaucracy.
