Democrat Congressman Calls Republicans ‘Cowards’ in Hallway Outburst on Gun Control
In a heated debate about gun control, Representative Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) exchanged words in front of onlookers. After leaving the House floor on March 29, Bowman spoke to reporters about the GOP’s position on weapons and shootings, accusing them of being in the pocket of the gun lobby and not backing gun legislation in the aftermath of a recent school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee. Bowman repeatedly called Republicans cowards and told journalists not to talk to Democrats about gun control since they weren’t in control of the House of Representatives.
Bowman urged reporters to question Republican members about their stance on gun control and their lack of action to save the lives of American children. Bowman’s frustration was directed at Massie when he claimed that there had never been a school shooting where teachers were allowed to carry firearms. Massie also asked if Bowman wanted to sign onto his bill, which referred to his repeal of gun-free zones at schools. Bowman responded by stating that more guns lead to more deaths and asked Massie if he had worked in a school before.
Massie replied that they have guns in Congress to protect themselves, but Bowman believes that kids should also have someone to protect them. During the exchange, Massie accused Bowman of screaming at him and walked away while the Democrat continued to follow him and address reporters. The incident was caught on video and circulated on Twitter, causing Massie to respond to the criticism.
As the debate over gun control continues, both parties must work together to ensure the safety of American citizens. It is essential to focus on finding common ground and solutions for preventing future tragedies.
