Vancouver Canucks To Hold Drag Show Before Game
In honor of Pride Night, the Vancouver Canucks of the NHL will hold a drag show before their Friday night game against the Calvary Flames. The team’s website details that the Pride Party on the Plaza will feature various Vancouver-based performers including Mx.Bukuru, Carrie Oki Doki, Xanax, and Jerrilynn Spears. The Canucks will also wear Pride-themed warm-up jerseys designed by a local artist, and drag show performers will join the team inside at the Stanley Park Brewing activation in Section 111. The team President Michael Doyle expressed the importance of this evening in celebrating the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and creating a welcoming atmosphere for all fans.
However, after several NHL players, including the Staal brothers of the Florida Panthers, James Reimer of the San Jose Sharks, and Ivan Provorov of the Philadelphia Flyers, refused to wear pride-themed attire citing religious beliefs, the league is reportedly considering abandoning Pride Night events altogether. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced on Monday that they will have to evaluate the issue during the off-season, acknowledging that it has become a distraction from the message of teamwork and inclusion that the league stands for.
