US Congressman Diagnosed With Cancer
A member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Dan Kildee (D-Mich.), has announced that he has cancer. He said on March 31 that a routine scan led to more tests, which led to a diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma, a common type of skin cancer. While radiation therapy is sometimes used in older or less robust patients, surgical treatment is the preferred course of action. The National Center for Biotechnology Information states that squamous cell carcinoma is often treatable, but in some cases, it can prove fatal.
Kildee, who is 64, remains optimistic about the outcome of his treatment. “In a few weeks, I will have surgery to remove the cancer. The prognosis after surgery and treatment is excellent,” he said. However, he admitted that he would need time to recover from the procedure. “I’m eager to have this chapter behind me and get back to work,” he added.
The congressman was given a warm reception from colleagues. Debbie Dingell, who serves on the committee with Kildee, described him as “one of the strongest people she knows” and without a doubt capable of overcoming the diagnosis and making a full recovery.
Kildee’s diagnosis follows in the footsteps of several other high-profile American politicians who have suffered from cancer, including Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
