William Barr Says Trump Indictment a ‘Political Hit Job’ and ‘Disgrace’

Former U.S. Attorney General, William Barr, has heavily criticized the indictment of Donald Trump, claiming it to be a “disgrace” and a “political hit job” that will damage American politics in the coming years.

During an interview at the National Review Institute Ideas Summit, Barr expressed his thoughts on the news of Trump’s indictment by a grand jury, the reasons for which remain unknown as they are under seal.

Trump is the first former president in the history of the United States to face criminal charges.

Barr described the case against Trump as “prosecutorial abuse” and referred to it as “pathetically weak.” He believes that the case will have a negative impact on politics leading up to the 2024 presidential election and accused the Democrats of wanting to focus attention on Trump in order to secure a Democratic president.

Furthermore, Barr suggested that the alleged federal campaign violation brought to light by New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg, which concerns a $130,000 payment made by Trump’s then-lawyer, Michael Cohen, to adult entertainment actress Stormy Daniels, would have been made whether or not Trump was running for president.

Legal analysts predict that several issues will be raised by Trump’s defense lawyers when he is arraigned, such as the statute of limitations and a faulty legal theory. Barr supported these assessments, noting that Bragg has turned what appears to be a technical misdemeanor into a felony, which is “outrageous.”
