Reba McEntire Rips New Tennessee Law Protecting Children From Drag Shows
Reba McEntire, a country singer, has criticized a recent Tennessee law that bans drag shows where children could potentially see them. The new law, signed into effect by Republican Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee in early March, will prohibit “adult cabaret entertainment,” such as drag performances, from taking place on public property or anywhere that minors can witness them. The co-sponsor of the bill, State Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson, claimed that the bill will provide parents with confidence that they will not encounter sexualized performances while attending public or private events with their children. Those who violate the law for the first time may be charged with a Class A misdemeanor, while subsequent offenses will be classified as a Class E felony.
When asked about the bill in an interview with The Los Angeles Times, McEntire expressed disappointment with the government’s decision. Instead, she believes that more attention should be directed towards feeding homeless children in Tennessee counties. She went on to say that focusing on men dressing up as women is not the most critical issue facing the country while empathizing with those who wear high heels. The Times then asked McEntire if her stance on the drag bill could possibly alienate some of her audience, to which she replied with an attempt to avoid disagreements and confrontations.
In June 2021, McEntire tweeted her irritation about being listed as a “special guest” without her knowledge or permission by Republican party fundraiser organizers at which South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem attended.
Representatives for Noem’s gubernatorial campaign claimed that McEntire had been informed beforehand and planned to perform at the function.
