Biden Ignores Urgent Bipartisan Call for Intervention Into Growing AI Technology
The term “artificial intelligence” (AI) refers to the use of advanced analysis and logic-based techniques, including machine learning, to interpret events, support and automate decisions, and take actions. As the development of AI technology continues, lawmakers from both parties are calling for congressional intervention in the controversial field. A letter signed by tech giants like Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak cited “profound risks to society and humanity” and called for a six-month pause to advanced AI developments. However, the Biden administration has remained silent on the matter.
Despite the lack of action from the administration, congressional leaders on both sides agree on the need for oversight of the growing technology as well as its potential risks. Deepfakes, for instance, could be used by adversaries as a weapon of attack rather than a tool for beneficial improvement. Bias in AI can lead to the wrong decisions, while learning failures can lead to no decisions. The need for AI to be complete and unbiased becomes imperative, given that its targets will be humans.
While government over-regulation isn’t favored, intervention in the private sector may be necessary to address these issues. Yet, the interests of the U.S. Intelligence Community regarding artificial intelligence remain unknown. Nevertheless, it’s imperative to follow “Trust but verify” principle when it comes to the development of AI technology.
