Manhattan DA Bragg Charges Garage Worker With Attempted Murder After Shooting Thief Who Shot Him First
Alvin Bragg, the Manhattan District Attorney, has once again stirred controversy as he charged Moussa Diarra, a 57-year old garage worker, with attempted murder. The incident occurred after Diarra confronted Charles Rhodie, who was allegedly attempting to steal equipment from the garage. Rhodie responded by shooting Diarra twice, once in the stomach and grazing his head. Despite his injuries, Diarra disarmed Rhodie and fired his own gun, hitting the attacker. Instead of charging Rhodie, Bragg charged Diarra with attempted murder, assault, and criminal possession of a weapon.
The New York Post reported that Diarra saw a man attempting to steal tools and equipment from the garage at 5:30am. After confronting him, Rhodie shot Diarra twice, but Diarra managed to disarm him and shoot him in return. Police then charged Diarra with attempted murder and other offenses.
Bragg has been known for his controversial decisions, such as bringing preposterous charges against Donald Trump and bodega operator Jose Alba, who was charged with murder after shooting a crazed man who attacked him with a knife.
Many people have criticized Bragg for focusing on minor crimes and charging working-class citizens while turning a blind eye to serious criminals. He boasts one of the worst conviction rates of any district attorney in the country when he actually takes criminals to trial.
While Kathy Hochul, the Governor of New York, has the power to remove Bragg from his position, she has only held one private meeting with him about his controversial decisions so far. If she doesn’t take action, public outrage may lead Bragg to drop charges against innocent citizens like Diarra and Alba.
