Black Panther director developing X-Files reboot with ‘diverse cast’

Chris Carter, the original creator of The X-Files series, has revealed plans for the iconic series to be rebooted with a “diverse cast” under the leadership of Ryan Coogler, the director of Black Panther, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Creed. Coogler’s production company, Proximity Media, has an exclusive five-year deal with Disney Television.

“I just spoke to a young man, Ryan Coogler, who is going to remount The X-Files with a diverse cast. So, he’s got his work cut out for him because we covered so much territory,” said Carter on the CBC podcast On the Coast with Gloria Macarenko.

X-Files premiered in 1993 and had a comeback in 2016 with Hollywood stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI Special Agents Mulder and Scully.

Carter added that the new series will be different from the original. “We’re so steeped in conspiracies now. The X-Files dealt with a central conspiracy, but now the world is so full of conspiracies that I think that it would be a different show.”

Duchovny and Anderson, who played Mulder and Scully, respectively, may not be part of the reboot. While Duchovny remained open to future projects, Anderson has expressed that she has no interest in returning to the series.

In 2017, Anderson commented that The X-Files needed more gender diversity in their all-male writing team, saying, “I believe we can do better.”

With this planned reboot, The X-Files will be transformed with a new approach to storytelling and different actors to bring the iconic characters to life.
