Ukraine is Forming Three New Army Corps—Should it Bring Back Divisions Too?

Despite the challenges faced by Ukraine as it reorganizes its military to fight Russia, it is ironic how unprepared it was for the invasion. Putin’s claim of a threat from Ukraine is unfounded, and NATO’s expansion along Russia’s border is purely defensive. Putin’s actions have made Ukraine a significant military threat to Russia.

The Russian campaign in Ukraine failed miserably, with Ukrainian forces recapturing vast amounts of territories from the occupying forces. However, the victories were bittersweet, with many executed men, women, and children found in the formerly occupied cities.

Creating new army corps and divisions is a complex process that requires time for training and development of practical experience, which Ukraine lacks. To be successful, Ukraine must depend on Western models and advisors to get the best results.

While a change in Ukraine’s military structure may enhance its fighting ability, it is essential to remember that Ukraine has never successfully carried out a “combined arms maneuver” offensive. Reorganizing the military in the middle of a war is challenging, particularly with limited resources and competing demands.

Ukraine is currently reserving around 150,000 troops for its spring offensive equipped with new western arms. The structure of Ukraine’s military may be too small, too large, or just right, depending on one’s perspective.

The suggestion of using nuclear weapons by Russian propagandists is desperate, defeatist, and will only result in Russia being shunned for years to come.
