John Bolton Panics: Trump Charges “Even Weaker Than I Thought”
Former National Security Adviser, John Bolton expressed concerns that the charges brought against former President of the United States, Donald Trump, are “even weaker than I thought,” while on CNN on Tuesday, regarding the 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first degree against him. District Attorney Alvin Bragg alleged that Trump committed criminal conduct by repeating and fraudulently falsifying New York business records to conceal damaging information from the voting public during the 2016 presidential election.
Bolton, a Yale Law School graduate, did not seem to be convinced with Bragg’s case against Trump. Speaking to CNN, Bolton said, “I think this is even weaker than I feared it would be.” Bolton also feared that the case could get dismissed before it even went to trial.
Bragg suggested that a New York election law would supersede the federal election laws, which Bolton referred to as “just wrong.” Bolton went on to argue that the Federal Election Campaign Act of 1971 absolutely preempts any state or local law to the contrary.
Earlier this week, Bolton feared that Trump’s indictment would ultimately help him politically. Bolton suggested that if Trump is acquitted, or the case gets dismissed because of legal insufficiency, it will be “rocket fuel” for him politically as he can claim that the case was a political prosecution.
Bolton is still considering running for president himself and has suggested that the right thing for Trump to do would be to step aside and let another Republican candidate carry the torch in 2024. Bolton also expressed worries that conservatives would still support Trump despite the indictment, saying “Trump is a cancer on the Republican party.”
