Hola, Homosaurus: Biden Admin Shells Out Six Figures To Translate Gay Dictionary Into Spanish
The Biden administration has awarded a $350,000 grant to the University of Washington to translate the Homosaurus, a dictionary of LGBTQ+ terms that includes phrases like “anal fisting” and “jizz,” into Spanish. The dictionary boasts over hundreds of phrases relating to bisexual, trans, gender, and intersex concepts. The Homosaurus logo features a dinosaur standing under a rainbow.
President Joe Biden has shown keen support for the National Endowment for Humanities, which has been showered with an all-time high of $207 million budgets for 2023, and a proposed $211 million budget for 2024. The Homosaurus grant is part of a larger goal to “restore and strengthen American democracy”.
The Homosaurus grant will be directed towards the University of Washington, where feminist scholar Marika Cifor will oversee the Spanish translation. She expects to complete the translation in three years and promises that the Spanish-language Homosaurus will include up to 1,600 terms. Cifor stated that this Spanish-language version of the dictionary will help marginalized communities gain easy access to information.
The Homosaurus dictionary encompasses a broad range of lesbian, gay, and transgender phrases, including vulgar ones like “ass fucking”, and less known terms specific to the gay community like “bear.” It also features terms that define minors under the age of 18, such as bisexual boys, gay boys, and transgender children. Homosaurus maintains a database, controlled by the Digital Transgender Archive, which aims to “trans-affirming,” “anti-racist,” and “feminist” academic resource.
The grant is aimed at expanding the inclusivity and accessibility of information to reach marginalized people, putting an emphasis on their basic struggles to gain access to useful content. The translation process of Homosaurus will take a few years to complete, using more extensive measures than just direct translation, in order to create a culturally adequate vocabulary.
