Congressman Who Supported Trump Endorses DeSantis for 2024
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has received an endorsement for the 2024 Republican Presidential nomination from Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky), a former Trump supporter. The endorsement was made by Never Back Down, the super PAC supporting DeSantis and urging him to enter the race.
Massie becomes the second member of the House GOP to endorse DeSantis even before he has entered the race.
The endorsement comes a day after former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of felony falsification of business records to the first degree. The latest Real Clear Politics poll shows DeSantis in second place to Trump by a substantial margin, but ahead of other challengers.
Massie’s Endorsement
In a statement, Massie urged DeSantis to run for President and praised his character and leadership qualities. He said, “America needs a leader who is decisive, respects the Constitution, understands policy, puts family first, and leads by inspiring.” He also pointed to six years of working with DeSantis in the House and witnessing his fight for freedom, liberty, fiscal responsibility, and constitutionally limited government.
Massie added that DeSantis surrounds himself with capable people who share his principles and puts Americans first over corporations, taking on large companies in Pharma, Agriculture, and Tech.
Massie’s History with Trump
Massie had been a former supporter of Donald Trump but became the focus of his anger in the final years of his presidency. Trump referred to the congressman as a “third rate Grandstander” in 2020 after Massie tried to stall a COVID-19 aid package worth $2.2 trillion. However, Trump praised Massie two years later, calling him a “Conservative Warrior” and a “first-rate Defender of the Constitution.”
‘Never Back Down’ Super PAC
The Never Back Down Super PAC supporting DeSantis was founded by former Trump ally and administration official Ken Cuccinelli, who believes that DeSantis is the future and will never back down.
