Democrat Expelled From Tennessee House, Two Others Face Same Fate as Debate Continues
One Democrat has been expelled from the Tennessee House of Representatives on April 6, while two others are in danger of being expelled as the debate continues.
Representative Gloria Johnson of Knox County narrowly escaped expulsion by only one vote. Thirty members voted against the expulsion, while only 65 voted in favor, one short of what was required to remove her from her seat. The chamber erupted in cheers and chants of “Gloria” following the announcement.
On the other hand, Representative Justin Jones of Nashville was expelled earlier in the day, and Representative Justin Pearson of Memphis faces the final vote of the evening with the debate ongoing in Nashville.
The lawmakers led protesters with a bullhorn in chants calling for gun control measures while on the House floor, following the deadly Covenant School shooting in Nashville last month. Resolutions to expel the members were introduced on Monday.
