House GOP announces second Afghanistan hearing amid pushback on White House report

The House Oversight Committee has announced that it will hold a second hearing on the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan. The announcement comes amid backlash from congressional Republicans regarding the White House’s recently released report that assigns blame to the Trump administration for the botched operation.

The hearing, which will take place on April 19th, will include testimony from officials at the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, as well as the inspectors general for the Defense Department, State Department, and the US Agency for International Development.

Chairman James Comer (R-KY) released a statement asserting that “The American people are owed answers about the Biden administration’s disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal, but all they are getting are excuses from this Administration.” Comer blames the Biden administration for several problematic decisions that led to the deaths of US service members, stranded Americans, and provided the Taliban with US military equipment.

A report outlining the Biden administration’s timeline for the Afghanistan withdrawal was recently released by the White House. It details how a series of decisions made by former President Trump complicated Biden’s efforts to end the war. The report assigns much of the blame for the chaos to the Trump administration, prompting criticism from several Republicans who demand accountability from the Biden administration.

Several Republicans, including Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), have spoken out against the report’s findings and have demanded a fuller investigation into the Afghanistan withdrawal. Scott introduced a bill earlier this year that would establish a joint select committee to conduct such an inquiry.

The withdrawal has been heavily criticized, particularly after a suicide attack outside the Hamid airport in Kabul left 13 Americans and roughly 200 Afghans dead. This incident has been one of several reasons cited by the House Republicans as justification for their investigation into the withdrawal.
