US Congress Should Recognize Genocide Against Tibetans, Falun Gong Adherents: Expert
An expert has urged the US Congress to recognize the actions of the Chinese Communist Party against Falun Gong adherents and Tibetans as genocide. Anders Corr, who is the publisher of the Journal of Political Risk and a columnist for The Epoch Times, has said that Congress and the State Department recognized the Uyghur genocide, and they should also acknowledge the genocide against the Falun Gong and Tibetans.
The Trump and Biden administrations had already declared China’s treatment of Uyghur ethnic minorities as “genocide” and “crimes against humanity” in 2021. Many countries, such as Belgium, Canada, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, and the Netherlands, have followed. However, Anders Corr stressed that Tibet has been subjected to genocide by Beijing for a long time, with mandatory DNA testing imposed on the people.
Moreover, 80% of Tibetan children are compelled to attend state-controlled boarding schools, distancing them from their family and language. They are taught Mandarin Chinese and communist propaganda, leading to alienation from their grandparents and Tibetan culture. The Tibet government-in-exile estimates that 1.2 million Tibetans died due to China’s repression of dissent, indicating various forms of genocide under the United Nations definition.
Falun Gong Adherents Genocide
Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline with meditative exercises and ethical principles, experienced a surge in popularity during the 1990s, with up to 100 million people practicing in China by the end of the decade. However, the Chinese regime perceived it as a threat and launched a nationwide campaign to eradicate it in 1999. As a result, millions of Falun Gong practitioners have been detained, tortured, and subjected to forced organ harvesting.
Experts have described the actions of Beijing as genocide, with Dr. Torsten Trey, founder of Doctors Against Forced Organ Harvesting, labeling the abuse as “cold genocide,” a slow but deadly suppression that destroys the group. Corr stresses that genocide can affect a race, religion, or ethnicity, with the Falun Gong, Tibetans, and Uyghurs members of the protected identities. He concludes that we need to recognize these genocides and act accordingly.
If the practice’s persecution is recognized as genocide, the expert speculates that the US might impose sanctions.
