Biden Condemns Tennessee Expelling Two Rioting Dems From State Legislature
Joe Biden declared on Thursday that it was” undemocratic” for two Tennessee Democrats to be expelled from the GOP-controlled House of Representatives on March 30 due to their” disorderly behavior.”
Fox News reports Biden said in a statement, “Today’s expulsion of lawmakers who engaged in peaceful protest is shocking, undemocratic, and without precedent. Rather than debating the merits of the issue, these Republican lawmakers have chosen to punish, silence, and expel duly-elected representatives of the people of Tennessee.”
Representatives Justin Jones, Justin Pearson, and Gloria Johnson, three Democrats, were dismissed by the Tennessee House in connection with a March 30 demonstration that resulted in raucous protest storming the condition Capitol on Thursday.
Representative Justin Jones was the first to be effectively expelled following a 72-25 voting that met the two-thirds majority requirement to do so. 99 people make up the Tennessee House, and 66 votes constitute the required bulk.
Johnson was defeated by the House in a 65-30 ballot, falling short of the required level by one.
Now, Pearson received a 69-26 vote to be expelled next.
Jones, Pearson, and Johnson led anti-gun protesters into the Capitol.
Jones shouted” no judge, no love” on the ground during the protest while using a microphone.
In his announcement, Biden stated that politicians needed to” work on commonsense gun safety measures ,” such as banning” assault weapons with high capacity articles.”
On Wednesday, Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton stated,” I want to make sure everyone understands that this has nothing to do with the protests outside the Capitol or the room of the House.”
Sexton continued,” This is about the actions of these three members on the House floor, how they silenced us, and the way they directed protests from the Chamber to those in the rooftop.”
