Golf-Rock steady Rahm moves into Masters lead with nine to play
authored by Steve Keating
As LIV Golf regular bearer Brooks Koepka’s’s hopes for the Green Jacket faded, Jon Rahm, who was channeling Spanish legend Seve Ballesteros on his day, moved two sharp shots to the top of the Masters scoreboard with nine to hold on Sunday.
Evergreen Phil Mickelson was going back in time as Koepka’s’s square at Augusta National was coming to an end. The 52-year-old, three-time Masters hero, carded a dramatic seven-under-65 to stay two behind Rahm.
The subject of 53 returned to the water-logged course to finish the second round after two decades of interrupted use brought on by pelting rain and fierce winds that toppled trees. At the end of the square, Koepka, who had led Rahm by four rounds the previous night, was in front by two.
If steps in Augusta had ended after the second round, Koepka would have been slipping into a Green Jacket because the LIV Tour tournaments are held over 54 holes.
However for Koepka, the disciplines need 72 pits to win.
The rock smooth Spaniard had taken control by the time the two reached the third round’s’s change.
Rahm, who carded birdie at three and eight and a lone birdie at nine to stand on 10 under, was far from magnificent.
Koepka, however, who had reached the top of the ranking every time, was unable to start. He went 19 pits without a bogey while taking bogeys at the ages of four, six, and nine.
Despite his difficulties, the four-time primary winner made it to the back nine with the support of evolution.
The 32-year-old American had won three majors in which he had held the lead or a portion of the 54-hole head.
A pair of Masters artists named Mickelson and Jordan Spieth were moving ahead of the two contenders.
Spieth, who began Koepka’s’s round 10 before, had a six-under 66 to close the game at seven under and three out of the lead.
