Chicago to Host 2024 Democratic National Convention

The city of Chicago has been selected to host the 2024 Democratic National Convention, prevailing over other major cities, including Atlanta and New York. The decision by the Democratic National Committee (DNC) followed requests from many Democrats in the Midwest, who wrote letters to DNC officials and President Joe Biden, advocating that hosting the convention in the area would be crucial in keeping the White House and congressional seats.

The convention is slated to take place from Aug. 19 to Aug. 22, and is expected to draw around 5,000 to 7,000 delegates and alternates, while also attracting approximately 50,000 visitors to Chicago. Daytime events will take place at the McCormick Place Convention Center, where the 2012 NATO Summit was held, and evening events will be held at the United Center, which was the principal site for the 1996 Democratic National Convention.

35 Democratic lawmakers across nine states wrote letters to President Biden, extolling the Democrats’ success in Midwestern states, particularly Michigan and Illinois. The lawmakers stated that “the Midwest is utterly indispensable to the party’s success” and that it should be the choice for the 2024 convention.

Illinois is a Democratic stronghold, with strong Democratic support for policies like an assault weapons ban and endorsing both abortion and workers’ rights. Residents of Chicago recently elected Brandon Johnson, who is predicted to adopt more progressive policies than those of previous politicians. Johnson’s predecessor, Lori Lightfoot, was one of those who campaigned for the city to host the convention, along with other politicians such as Sens. Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin, and Gov. J.B. Pritzker (all Democrats).

The convention will showcase the significance of the Midwest’s “Blue Wall” states, which include Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. During the 2022 midterm elections, all the Democratic governors from these states were re-elected. It will also serve as an opportunity to showcase the achievements of President Biden’s policies and job performance, as he is likely to declare his reelection bid for 2024 later in the year.
