Biden Warns of the Danger Posed by ‘Enemies of Peace’ During Speech in Northern Ireland

During his visit to Northern Ireland, President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of restoring the power-sharing executive that was established as part of the Good Friday Agreement, and warned of the potential danger posed by “enemies of peace.” Speaking at Ulster University, he reminded the audience of the effort that went into achieving the 1998 agreement, and that there were no guarantees that it would deliver the progress that they see today. President Biden also talked about the complex challenges brought about by the UK’s departure from the European Union and encouraged leaders from the UK and the EU to address these issues in a way that best serves the people of Northern Ireland.

President Biden also referenced the attempted murder of Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in February and praised politicians for their unity in the aftermath of the shooting. He added that the democratic institutions established by the Good Friday Agreement remain crucial to the future of Northern Ireland. Furthermore, he emphasized the willingness of the United States to support Northern Ireland’s economic potential and that economic opportunities are in store for Belfast, as well as for other communities across the United Kingdom, Ireland, and the US.

White House denies claims that President Biden is “Anti-British”

President Biden met with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak for talks in Belfast regarding the political situation in Northern Ireland. However, some politicians and media outlets have suggested that President Biden may be “anti-British.” Both the former leader of the DUP, Dame Arlene Foster, and DUP MP Sammy Wilson have made statements suggesting a bias against British interests exists. Despite these claims, the White House denied such allegations during the meeting. The trip marked Biden’s fourth visit to the region and follows his attendance at the Annual Friends of Ireland Luncheon on Capitol Hill on St. Patrick’s Day earlier this year.
