‘All Of This Was False’: Josh Hawley Rips Into AG Garland Over Senate Testimony

Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) publicly criticized Attorney General Merrick Garland for providing misleading testimony in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. He claimed that Garland’s statements were either misleading or entirely untrue. In a letter sent to Garland’s office on Tuesday, Hawley expressed his concerns and later shared it on his tweet.

According to Hawley’s tweet, “Merrick Garland told me — under oath — the FBI was not targeting Catholic parishes. That appears to have been a lie. I want the truth.”

In the letter, Hawley referred to Garland’s testimony, where he claimed that the Department of Justice was not targeting sources and spies in Latin mass parishes and other Catholic parishes in the country. However, evidence has emerged, refuting these claims since then.

Recent investigative findings by the House Judiciary Committee showed that Garland’s statements were untrue. Hawley concluded his letter by directly accusing Garland of deciding to convert Catholic congregations into FBI front organizations and lying to Congress about it. He also called it an “unconscionable assault” on American Catholics’ First Amendment rights and his duty to enforce law.

Hawley’s letter was released alongside a House Judiciary Select Subcommittee report on the Weaponization of the Federal Government and a letter from Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) to FBI Director Christopher Wray, indicating that at least one undercover FBI agent had spied on Catholic parishioners in Virginia to combat domestic terrorism.
