Social Security update: Direct payment worth $914 arriving in 19 days

The monthly payment of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will be worth $914 for individual filers this year. Eligible recipients will receive their payments in 19 days, on May 1. Joint filers and “essential people” will receive different amounts.

Essential people are those who live with someone receiving SSI and provide them with necessary care. Couples will receive a payment of $1,371, while essential people will get a payment of $458. The payments are delivered to beneficiaries on the first day of the month. But if the first of a month falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment will be sent on the business day before that month.

For example, four months in the list, September, June, March, and December, there will be two SSI payments. This is because the first of the month falls on a weekend in July, October, and April. January 1 is a national holiday. But the total number of payments remains the same, that is, 12 checks per year.

The Social Security Administration has been issuing SSI payments since January 1974. Since 1975, the payment rates have been increasing for cost-of-living adjustments, according to the agency.
