Democrats Call for Dianne Feinstein’s Resignation Amid Extended Absence
Senator Dianne Feinstein, a Democrat from California, has been absent from the Senate, causing concern among her party members, especially with the Senate scheduled to come back from its recess on April 17. Feinstein, who is 89 years old, announced in March that she was taking a leave of absence due to a shingles diagnosis, hoping to be back by the end of that month, which didn’t happen. Now, several Democrats are calling on her to resign, including Representative Ro Khanna from California and Representative Dean Phillips from Minnesota. Feinstein’s extended absence is causing particular concern among Democrats, as it affects the confirmation of judicial nominees, and the Senate is closely divided with a 51-49 vote.
Moreover, President Joe Biden has been nominating judges and cabinet members who worry some Democrats, as they have partisan support based on characteristics such as race, sexual orientation, and sex, in the name of equity. Khanna is agitated about Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk’s recent decision to rule that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) violated federal standards by approving mifepristone for use as an abortion method in 2000. He believes that Feinstein is incapable of fulfilling her duties, and for that reason, she should resign.
Feinstein’s office released a statement on Wednesday night stating that complications were delaying her return, and she would work remotely from home in San Francisco. She requested Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to find a replacement and allow another Democratic senator to temporarily serve until she resumes her committee work.
If Feinstein resigns, Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) will appoint her replacement, and he has been committed to appointing a black woman. Feinstein announced in December that she intended to finish her term, and in February that she would not be running for reelection, and candidates, including Representatives Katie Porter and Adam Schiff, sought to replace her.
In conclusion, the Twitter trend “Feinstein” has been a hot topic for the past few days, and this development could further add more to the conversation.
