Biden’s Alternative Afghanistan History Needs a Reality Check

Last week, the Biden administration released a report on lessons learned from the Afghanistan withdrawal, hiding behind the long Easter weekend. However, the White House report appears to blame others and rewrite history instead of providing accountability for Biden’s catastrophic failures. The report contains misleading claims that ignore facts. Let’s take a look at ten of them:

Claim 1: The Taliban agreed to refrain from attacking U.S. troops if the U.S. withdrew by May 2021, under the February 2020 Doha Agreement.

Reality: The agreement set seven conditions for withdrawing U.S. troops, but the Taliban violated six of those. The withdrawal wasn’t mandated on an arbitrary timeline, as the Taliban had failed to uphold their side of the bargain.

Claim 2: Biden had to withdraw from Afghanistan by May 2021 under Trump’s deadline, or the Taliban would resume attacks on U.S. and allied troops.

Reality: Biden stated in August 2021 that regardless of the Doha Agreement, he would have withdrawn U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

Claim 3: Trump’s direct talks with the Taliban were conducted without consultation with allies and partners.

Reality: Various international representatives welcomed Trump’s talks with the Taliban.

Claim 4: The intelligence community warned that Taliban advances could lead to capturing Kabul within a year or two after U.S. troop withdrawal.

Reality: Intelligence assessments delivered to President Biden suggested that Afghan forces would collapse by early or late 2021.

Claim 5: The National Security Council held multiple high-level planning meetings and rehearsals for the Afghanistan withdrawal throughout the summer.

Reality: The Biden administration waited until a few hours before the Taliban takeover of Kabul to establish transit centers for evacuations.

Claim 6: An interagency meeting in May discussed complex issues related to evacuations.

Reality: The Biden administration disregarded warnings while evacuating at-risk allies, ignored Guam’s offer as a processing facility, and denied Pakistan’s offer for evacuee transit.

Claim 7: Consular officers were sent to Kabul to process special immigrant visas (SIV) applications.

Reality: When the evacuation was at its peak, only 36 U.S. consular officers were in Kabul, with over 100,000 applicants waiting for SIV processing.

Claim 8: Biden’s team surged resources to accelerate the SIV program.

Reality: By the time the evacuation started, only 1,962 SIV applicants and their families were evacuated from Afghanistan.

Claim 9: Leaving Afghanistan freed up critical military and intelligence resources to counter terrorist threats in other countries.

Reality: Al-Qaida and ISIS-K operate in all provinces of Afghanistan, creating the world’s largest petri dish for terrorism, and CENTCOM Cmdr. Gen. Kurilla warns they could attack Americans in the region within six months with little warning.

Claim 10: Biden’s decision to leave Afghanistan has strengthened U.S. standing around the world.

Reality: Opinion polls show that 57% of foreign public from 17 allied countries disapproved of Biden’s withdrawal, and opinion of the United States plummeted in several nations.

It’s surprising that no official in the Biden administration has been fired or has resigned due to the Afghanistan withdrawal disaster. While President Biden refuses to take responsibility for his actions, the outcome speaks louder than words. Millions of Afghans now suffer under the Taliban’s brutal rule, 1,000 Americans have been stranded behind enemy lines, and 13 American service members have died.
