Trump Sues Michael Cohen For $500 Million

Donald Trump, the former President, has taken legal action against his former attorney, Michael Cohen, suing him for over $500 million. The lawsuit was filed on Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

The lawsuit claims that Cohen has betrayed the attorney-client relationship, spread falsehoods, and exhibited improper enrichment. Cohen is accused of ignoring “cease and desist” orders and making public statements that have violated his contractual agreement.

The lawsuit states, “This is an action arising from [Cohen’s] multiple breaches of fiduciary duty, unjust enrichment, conversion and breaches of contract by virtue of [Cohen’s] past service as [Trump’s] employee and attorney.”

In addition to seeking damages of over $500 million, the lawsuit seeks compensation of $74,000 plus interest and other expenses that were allegedly obtained through fraudulent misrepresentation and unlawful conversion by Cohen.

Lanny Davis, Cohen’s attorney, issued a statement claiming that Trump is abusing the legal system by using it to harass and intimidate Cohen. Davis added, “Mr. Cohen will not be deterred and is confident that the suit will fail based on the facts and the law.”

The lawsuit comes after an escalation in the investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg into whether Trump made hush payments during the 2016 election cycle. Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records last week after being indicted by a grand jury.

Although Cohen spoke to the grand jury and has spoken out about the case, a source close to Trump’s legal team has denied that the lawsuit has any connection to Bragg’s investigation.

In 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to a number of crimes, including lying to Congress and facilitating payments to two women threatening to come forward with allegations about alleged affairs with Trump. Cohen, who claimed Trump directed the hush money payments, was sentenced to three years in prison and released in late 2021.

Cohen has spoken out about his “blind loyalty” that led him to cover up for Trump’s “dirty deeds” ever since his break with Trump.

Trump is currently facing legal jeopardy, with numerous investigations being run by prosecutors whom he claims are politically motivated. In a $250 million New York civil fraud case, Trump asked a judge this month to force Cohen to appear for a deposition. In January, Trump and one of his attorneys were ordered to pay fines of nearly $1 million over a lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and others that the judge had deemed “frivolous”.
