Republican Rep. Fry Introduces ‘No More Political Prosecutions’ Legislation

Rep. Russell Fry, a Republican congressman from South Carolina, has introduced the No More Political Prosecutions Act. The bill proposes that former presidents and vice presidents have the option to move any civil and criminal legal cases against them from state courts to federal courts.

Fry’s bill has been referred to the Judiciary Committee, on which Fry sits. The congressman said, “Politically motivated prosecutors should not be able to wield unwarranted power and target our nation’s top leaders for their own personal gain. This legislation will prevent the political prosecutions of presidents and vice presidents and thwart corrupt prosecutors’ agendas.”

The Republican Party is looking at moving the proposed legislation to the House floor. This marks the first legislative response after former President Donald Trump was indicted in New York on April 4.

Trump pleaded not guilty to all charges, stating that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has “no case” against him. Fry and many other Republicans have criticized Bragg for bringing charges against Trump, and they share the view that Trump’s trial should be held outside of the Democrat-dominated borough of Manhattan.

House Republicans are investigating Bragg’s prosecution of Trump. According to a recent survey conducted by Morning Consult, 45% of voters supported the GOP congressional investigation of Bragg’s grand jury investigation into Trump. Sixty-three percent of Republicans and 34% of Democrats approved of the GOP’s efforts.
