Senate Leader Proposes Rules for AI Amid Rising ChatGPT Popularity
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has unveiled a proposal to create a set of regulations for artificial intelligence (AI) in response to national security and educational concerns, as platforms like ChatGPT are becoming increasingly popular.
Under Schumer’s proposal, companies would be required to allow independent experts to evaluate and test AI technologies before their public rollout or update, and to provide users with access to their findings.
As the fastest-growing consumer application in history with over 100 million monthly active users, the AI program ChatGPT has drawn the attention of U.S. lawmakers due to its ability to quickly generate responses to various types of questions.
Schumer, a Democrat, used China’s recent introduction of its AI regulation system as evidence of the United States’ need to act as a “wake-up call” to keep pace with and harness the potential of this powerful technology. Schumer’s proposal has not yet been made into a law, but it will require the support of Congress and the White House before it can become one.
In contradistinction to President Joe Biden’s uncertain stance on AI risks, the U.S. Commerce Department has requested public input on potential accountability measures, whereas Beijing’s cyberspace regulator released draft rules on the management of generative AI services.
