John Lott: Gun-Free Zones, Red Flag Laws Only Make Gun Crime Worse
Two of the most well-liked gun control proposals, according to scholar, scholar, and writer John Lott, have little to no effect on gun crime and make the issue worse for the people they are meant to secure.
At the National Rifle Association’s’s Annual Meetings and Exhibits in Indianapolis, Lott addressed conference attendees, saying,” Those are the people who are affected.”
With more than 100 peer-reviewed posts and ten books on the subject, Lott is regarded as an expert on guns and crime. He oversaw two lectures on the efficacy of red flag laws, gun control measures, and gun-free areas.
He claimed that Nikki Goeser’s’s tale perfectly captures the flaws in these regulations.
” Stalked and Defenseless: How Gun Control Helped My Predator Death My Father in Front of Me” was written by Goeser. She also serves as the Crime Prevention Research Center’s’s executive producer, with Lott serving as its leader.
Due to family responsibilities, Goeser was unable to attend the event where he was scheduled to speak.
Goeser ran a music company with her late father, Ben, fourteen years later. She was pursued by a soldier the couple had met who had fallen in love with her.
Goeser was authorized to carry a concealed revolver, but it was against the law to do so in Tennessee, where she was born and raised.
Goeser’s’s sneak showed up one evening as they were running their music business and shot her spouse seven times. The officers were aware of Goeser’s’s predicament, but the psycho had not been deterred.
Goeser has admitted to Lott that she is unsure of her ability to stop the violence if she had her pistol. However, she is certain that following the law prevented her from defending either herself or her spouse.
She was denied the opportunity, as the book’s’s title states, Lott claimed.
Goeser’s’s scenario, according to Lott, is the ideal illustration of the drawbacks of gun-free regions.
94 percent of mass killings since 1950 have taken place in gun-free areas, according to CPRC data.
One well-known people murderer, according to Lott, provided his justification in a statement written the year before he committed the crime.
According to Lott, the 19-year-old man who killed ten men on May 14, 2022, in a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, has been labeled as an extreme sexist. However, Lott claimed that the shooter identified as an activist and eco-terrorist despite being an outspoken sexist.
The gunman asserted in his statement that having too many children by minorities was harming the environment. This is the reason he chose to harm gray men.
According to Lott,” Attacking in a weapon-restricted region may reduce the chance of human pushback.” Places with strict gun legislation are equally good places to attack, and “…” places where CCW are outlawed or prohibited may feel great areas of attack.
According to Lott, the state should think about ways to encourage the legal carrying of firearms rather than disarming individuals. Lott, for instance, is in favor of arming teacher when it comes to school shootings.
He claimed that 20 says now permit educators to carry weapons, including some of the most lenient legislation in Oklahoma, Utah, and Ohio. A school is a more difficult goal from the viewpoint of the shooter because they are unsure of which, if any, teachers are carrying weapons.
Lott remarked,” You have literally hundreds of colleges all over the country with armed teacher.”
He claimed that as of yet, he is unaware of any unintentional killings or incidents involving an armed instructor that occurred at a school during class hours. Additionally, there haven’t been any murders at those school. He claimed that this is a tried-and-true strategy.
Lott remarked,” We don’t need to speculate.”
Most of the time, the sniper is aware that they are either going to be killed or captured. In fact, according to Lott, the majority of people murderers he has studied have left works that make it clear they intend to commit suicide.
According to Lott, the penalty for carrying a hitman in an area where it is forbidden in Tennessee is six years in prison.
Lott pondered how much of a barrier an additional six years would be in light of the fact that, if captured intact, the perpetrator may face life in prison or the death penalty.
Lott remarked,” It seems as though there is no punishment for these men.”
Death Is Not Always the Cause of Depression
According to reports, Goeser’s’s sneak had displayed psychotic behavior and had been labeled as mentally sick. He kept stalking Goeser, writing her fancy papers while she was incarcerated. His release schedule has been postponed to 2028 because he was found guilty of felony stalking by email.
Lott claimed that the possibility of the stalker’s’s distribution raises a different issue.
Goeser wrote about her intense pain and loneliness following her husband’s’s death in her book. She claimed that there were times when she was unsure of her ability to hold on.
However, that does not imply that she was depressive, Lott said.
According to Lott, Goeser could have been disarmed under red flag laws, also referred to as serious harm safety orders, if someone in her career believed she might try to harm herself or commit suicide.
Red flag guidelines are present in 19 states and the District of Columbia. These enable members of the family, the household, law enforcement, or all three to approach a judge and ask for the confiscation of an individual’s’s firearms in order to stop them from harming themselves or others.
Most people simply cave.
The person who is content to the arrangement should be given the opportunity to present a protection or hire legal counsel. According to Lott, formal prote
