Discover how Russia is outsmarting sanctions with European banks, as the U.S. shares its findings.
Hold onto your hats, folks! The U.S. is taking action against Russia’s sneaky tactics to evade Western sanctions. Brian Nelson, Treasury undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, recently held briefings in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Italy to spread the word on effective policing of sanctions imposed over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
During these briefings, Nelson shared critical information on the military goods that Russia is trying to acquire, including optical devices, electronics, and manufacturing equipment. He urged allies to stay alert for “red flags” such as large cash payments, routing payments through third countries, and multiple tenders or shipments of identical products from different providers for the same end user.
But that’s not all! Elizabeth Rosenberg, assistant secretary for terrorist financing and financial crimes, is also hitting the road to strengthen sanctions enforcement and combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.
Let’s keep the pressure on Russia and stay vigilant against their sneaky tactics. (Reporting by David Lawder; Editing by Lisa Shumaker)
