Packers Star Aaron Rodgers Traded To New York Jets

Get ready, Jets fans! Star quarterback Aaron Rodgers is officially a New York Jet after the team finalized a massive deal with the Green Bay Packers on Monday.

The Packers and Jets agreed to a deal that includes “major compensation,” a first-round pick swap, a second-round pick this year, and a conditional first-round pick in 2024, according to NFL.com insider Ian Rapoport. After weeks of rumors that Rodgers was being shipped to New York, both teams finally sealed the deal for the four-time MVP and Super Bowl-winning quarterback.

According to ESPN, the Packers will send Rodgers, their 2023 first-round pick (15th overall), and 2023 fifth-round pick to the Jets, and will get the Jets’ 2023 first-round pick (13th overall), 2023 second-round pick, and 2023 sixth-round pick in return. The Packers will also receive the Jets’ 2024 second-round pick if Rodgers plays 65% of the plays this season, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Rodgers, who turns 40 in December, expressed his “intention” to play for the Jets next season on the “Pat McAfee Show” last month. The trade rumors lasted for weeks as the teams negotiated and hashed out details of the blockbuster trade.

This marks the second time in the past 15 years that the Packers have sent their star QB to the Jets. Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre was traded to the Jets in 2008 after playing 16 seasons in Green Bay. Favre was also 39 years old when he was traded.

Rodgers was drafted by the Packers out of the University of California in 2005. After sitting under Favre for a few years, he became the starting quarterback in 2008 after Favre’s trade. Just two years later, Rodgers led the Packers to their fourth Super Bowl title in 2011. The quarterback continued his dominance in the NFL, winning four MVPs and setting passing records. Last season, Rodgers became the fifth quarterback in NFL history to throw for 500 touchdowns.

And here’s a fun fact for Jets fans: Hall of Fame Jets QB Joe Namath reportedly gave Rodgers his blessing to wear No. 12 since that’s the number Rodgers donned with the Packers, but Rodgers is expected to wear No. 8 — the number he wore in college — when he takes the field for the Jets, a source told ESPN.
