Blinken Announces 72-Hour Ceasefire in Sudan

Breaking news from Sudan: a three-day ceasefire has been agreed upon by the army and a paramilitary group, putting a temporary pause on the violent conflict that has ravaged the country. This nationwide ceasefire, set to begin at midnight local time, comes after intense negotiations over the past 48 hours, according to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

While previous attempts at a temporary ceasefire have failed, officials are hopeful that this latest pause will serve as the basis for negotiations towards a permanent end to the conflict, which has already claimed hundreds of lives and left thousands of foreigners stranded in the country.

The United States is committed to supporting a durable end to the fighting and will work with regional and international partners, as well as Sudanese civilian stakeholders, to assist in the creation of a committee to oversee the negotiation, conclusion, and implementation of a permanent cessation of hostilities and humanitarian arrangements in Sudan.

As the ceasefire takes effect, humanitarian corridors will be opened, allowing citizens and residents to reach hospitals and safe areas. Foreign diplomats and aid workers will also be evacuated, among other individuals.

Death Toll Rising

The Rapid Support Forces have affirmed their full readiness to cooperate, coordinate, and provide all facilities necessary for expatriates and missions to leave the country safely. They stand by the Sudanese people and strive to achieve their legitimate aspirations for freedom, justice, democracy, and the rule of law.

During the period of the declared armistice, the Rapid Support Forces have committed to a complete ceasefire and warn against any continued violations. Let’s hope this ceasefire leads to a lasting peace in Sudan.
