Florida legislature to consider proposal that would allow DeSantis to launch 2024 bid

Get ready, folks! Florida’s legislature is about to make a big decision that could pave the way for Governor Ron DeSantis to run for president in 2024. The proposed amendment, introduced by state GOP Sen. Travis Hutson, seeks to clarify that the state’s existing “resign to run” law does not apply to people seeking to run for president or vice president. This is a huge step for DeSantis, who has been touring politically relevant areas of the United States and giving speeches that appear to pitch his case to be president over that of his main rival, former President Donald Trump.

Currently, the law states that elected officials must resign from their state office if seeking to run for a federal office, which would force DeSantis to resign from his governor’s position if he throws his hat into the ring for 2024. But with this new amendment, DeSantis could return to his position should he not secure the GOP nomination. Hutson said he proposed the amendment to ensure DeSantis could return to his position, telling NBC News, “I am a bit biased because I think Gov. DeSantis has done such a good job.”

The governor is popular among Republicans in both chambers, so the bill is expected to pass the House and Senate. DeSantis is likely to sign the bill in approval as well, as it is geared toward his interest.

Despite trailing Trump in every major national poll by double digits, DeSantis remains undeterred. He recently dismissed his polling decline against Trump, stating, “I’m not a candidate.” But with this new amendment, it’s clear that DeSantis is inching closer to an announcement of his candidacy.
