Minnesota, Alabama State Representatives Expected to Vote on New Gun Control Laws

Get ready for some heated debates as state legislatures from the North and the South consider gun control legislation this week.

The Minnesota House of Representatives is expected to pass HF 2890, an Omnibus Bill that includes universal background checks and Minnesota’s version of the extreme risk protection order, or red flag law.

Meanwhile, in Alabama, lawmakers are considering a set of bills that could make it a misdemeanor for a gun owner to fail to tell a police officer if they are armed. There are also bills to redefine what a “trigger activator” is and to make it illegal for a person with a concealed carry license to carry a firearm on school property.

But what do the sponsors of these bills have to say? Unfortunately, none of them returned calls seeking comment.

The Minnesota law would do more than just expand background checks, according to Brian Strawser, chairman of the Minnesota Gun Owners Caucus. The law would also require private sellers to perform background checks on buyers and keep a record of that check for 20 years.

Strawser said a gun dealer could do the background check, and a state-issued purchase permit can be used as proof of a background check. The bill would also establish a red flag, allowing a person’s firearms to be confiscated if a reporting party can convince a judge that the person is a danger to themselves or others.

Meanwhile, in Alabama, the National Rifle Association (NRA) is calling on gun owners to oppose the new laws. But James Moses, president of the Alabama State Rifle and Pistol Association, doesn’t think the laws, if passed, will have much impact.

“That’s kind of a waste of time, in my opinion,” Moses told The Epoch Times.
