Albuquerque Small Business Owner Shoots, Kills Would-Be Burglar Who Tunneled Through Wall

Small Business Owner in Albuquerque Shoots and Kills Burglar

A small business owner in Albuquerque took matters into his own hands when a man broke into his shop in the middle of the night. The owner, who wishes to remain anonymous for his own safety, had already experienced two break-ins before and was sleeping in his newly-purchased smoke shop when the burglar broke in and began waving weapons at him. Fearing for his life, the owner shot and killed the intruder.

Police Investigate Shooting as Justifiable Homicide

Albuquerque Police are investigating the shooting as a “justifiable homicide.” According to a news release, detectives learned that the owner shot an intruder who appeared to be breaking in with burglary tools. The man who was shot died as a result of gunshot wounds, and detectives are working with the District Attorney’s Office to investigate the business owner’s claims of self-defense.

Shop Owners Sleeping in Their Stores to Thwart Burglars

This incident is not an isolated case. Shop owners across the country are sleeping in their stores to protect them from burglars. In Houston, restaurant and bar owners are sleeping in their establishments, armed, in order to protect them from robbers. They blame Houston’s bail policies, which have resulted in more criminals out on the streets.

Investigation Finds Criminals Committing More Crimes While Out on Bail

An investigation by ABC affiliate KTRK found that Houston’s bail policies have allowed more criminals back onto the streets. Criminals were committing more crimes while out on bail, and some offenders were out on multiple bonds. This trend is a cause for concern for small business owners who are taking matters into their own hands to protect their livelihoods.
