Transgender Runner Offers To Give Back Medal After Beating 14,000 Women In Marathon, Says ‘I Didn’t Do Anything Wrong’
Transgender Runner Offers to Give Back Medal After Outperforming Women in London Marathon
Male runner Glenique Frank, who identifies as a transgender woman, has offered to give back his finisher’s medal after outrunning approximately 14,000 women in the women’s category of the London Marathon. Despite the backlash, Frank stands by his decision to compete in the women’s category.
“If they want me to give my medal back, I’ll say, ‘OK, fine. No problem,'” the 54-year-old told the New York Post. “But I don’t want to apologize, because I didn’t do anything wrong.”
Registration Form Listed Three Categories
Frank stated that the registration form for the marathon listed three possible categories: male, female, and other. “I ticked ‘female’ because I see myself as female,” Frank said.
Two-time Olympian Mara Yamauchi slammed Frank on social media after seeing the results of the race. “This male ran in yesterday’s #LondonMarathon as Glenique Frank in the female category (Mass race) finishing in 6160th place out of 20123,” Yamauchi wrote. “So nearly 14,000 actual females suffered a worse finish position bc of him.”
Controversy Surrounding Male Runners in Female Category
Since March 31, World Athletics and BritAthletics have banned post-puberty males from the female category. Under UKA transitional arrangements, males who had already entered races in the female category could still race. “Nevertheless, males in the female category is UNFAIR for females,” Yamauchi added.
