Purple State Supreme Court Makes Major Ruling On Election Integrity Law, Reversing Previous Decision
North Carolina Supreme Court Makes Key Election Decisions
In a series of rulings on Friday, the North Carolina Supreme Court reinstated a voter ID law and upheld Republican-led redistricting maps. The court swung from a 4-3 Democrat-controlled majority to a 5-2 Republican majority in November, making these decisions possible. The voter ID law, which was enacted in 2018 but previously thrown out over claims of discrimination, has been widely supported by North Carolina voters. The court’s Republican majority wrote that “subjective tests and judicial sleight of hand” have thwarted the will of the people and the legislature. The decision on redistricting maps could give Republicans an advantage in the 2024 congressional elections in the state.
Reaction to the Rulings
Republicans praised the decisions, while Democrats decried them. North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore said the rulings ensured that “our constitution and the will of the people of North Carolina are honored.” Democrat State Attorney General Josh Stein called the redistricting decision a “blow to democracy.”
Other Election-Related Rulings
The court also ruled that felons must complete their probation and parole before regaining their voting rights, reversing a trial court decision.
