Twitter Founder Jack Dorsey Still Upset Over Elon Musk Takeover
Former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey Criticizes Elon Musk’s Leadership
On Friday, Jack Dorsey, the founder and former CEO of Twitter, spoke out against current owner Elon Musk’s leadership of the social media giant. Dorsey made the comments while addressing users of Bluesky Social, a Twitter alternative that he is backing.
“No,” Dorsey answered when asked if Musk was the best leader for Twitter. “Nor do I think he acted right after realizing his timing (of the purchase) was bad. Nor do I think the board should have forced the sale. It all went south.”
Musk’s Attempted Takeover of Twitter
In April 2022, reports emerged that Musk had become one of Twitter’s largest shareholders with a 9.2 percent stake, leading to rumors of a hostile takeover. On April 14, 2022, Musk made an offer to purchase Twitter for $54.20 per share, amounting to a $44 billion bid. After weeks of negotiation, the board approved the sale in June, but Musk sought to end the acquisition over concerns about the number of bots on the platform.
After a legal battle, a Delaware Court of Chancery gave Musk until October 28 to close the deal, which he ultimately did. After taking over, Musk cut staff and extraneous spending to make Twitter profitable and introduced a “blue check” system that charged users $8 a month for verification.
Dorsey’s Criticism of the “Blue Check” System
Dorsey criticized the “blue check” system, saying, “Payment as proof of human is a trap, and I’m not aligned with that at all. The payment systems being used for that proof exclude millions if not billions of people.” Fox News reports that many notable users and agencies have kept blue check marks, while government officials and agencies have been given gray checks.
Twitter’s Past and Present
In November 2022, Dorsey acknowledged that he grew the company too quickly and apologized for it. He also said that Twitter would never have survived as a public company. In December, Bari Weiss published Round 2 of the Twitter files, which showed that previous Twitter leadership built blacklists and participated in shadow banning for years under the watch of former Twitter lead counsel Vijaya Gadde. Gadde and other Twitter executives, including Dorsey, lied about shadow banning for years.
