Trump tells Farage: UK’s Conservative Party has gone “far left”.
Donald Trump: UK Conservatives Losing Because They’re Not Conservative
Former US President Donald Trump has given an interview with former Brexit leader Nigel Farage, in which he commented on the state of the UK’s Conservative Party. Trump suggested that the party is facing a potential rout from office because it has abandoned its conservative principles.
Conservatives Going Far Left
During the interview, Trump noted that the Conservatives had been “literally going far left” and that they were not pursuing conservative policies. He suggested that if they had stayed true to their conservative principles, they may not be facing such dire polling numbers.
Trump was diplomatic about Conservative leader Rishi Sunak and former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, but did note that Johnson had “really went a little bit on the liberal side” once he became Prime Minister.
Conservative Missteps
Trump did not specify which policies he was referring to, but the Conservatives have indeed turned their backs on many of the pledges they made to voters in various manifestos prior to the 2010, 2015, 2017, and 2019 general elections. Fracking is banned, the tax burden is at its heaviest since the Second World War, immigration is higher than ever, and a bill to heavily restrict free speech online has been introduced, among other missteps.
Trump’s Views on UK Politics
Trump’s interview with Farage also covered other topics, including the prospect of a Labour government and the state of US politics. The interview is available to watch online.
